Honestly, I think a lot of folks don't give Matt Reeves enough credit as a director. Dark Knight is best film but Begins is my favourite by far. It won’t sustain a series and it was not the way to go with the character.īegins has real heart and the most style of the trilogy.

ALFRED BATMAN BEGINS MOVIE

The Batman is a quality production but it’s also a pudding of a movie not so much grounded as ground down. So is the microwave plot from Begins but at least that was entertaining. Riddler shootout is ridiculous and completely at odds with the character as established. Also following someone’s else’s clues does not make you a detective Mr Reeves. Pattinson was solid but his baffling contempt for Alfred really soured me on the character. Tumbler pancakes the Bat Dodge and it’s poorly shot highway massacre where they let the gangster murderer go at the end of the scene so they can let him go again after attempted murder at the end of the movie. If The Batman had built to something actually interesting like Court of Owls it might have justified the ponderous length, but the ‘revelation’ of Gotham city officials being corrupt was such a nothing burger that all the pathos and moodiness just seemed juvenile. You can see the influence of comics by Loeb and Miller in both works but I kinda can't wait for more modern inspiration taken from folks like Grant Morrison and Scott Snyder, which I'm hoping we get from the new DCU movies at least. I didn't like how Ra's al Ghul was used in Begins at all but Scarecrow was rather decent actually saved by a strong performance by Cillian Murphy.

ALFRED BATMAN BEGINS SERIAL

The Batman wins in terms of villains for me too, Riddler and Penguin are two of my favourite Batman villains and Riddler being a serial killer just worked so well. For those curious, there's an excellent comic called The Knight by Chip Zdarsky that shows Bruce travelling the world and training that gives a good idea of what Bruce undertakes to become Batman. I like that in Begins they show Bruce learning his trade but in The Batman i love how self sufficient he is as a vigilante (something the Bale version doesn't do as much), both are excellent depictions of Batman that get overlooked quite a bit. I think both Pattinson and Bale measure up just as well as each other although I think Bale as Batman is not as good in the sequels (the better performances come from Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Gary Oldman and Michael Caine) but purely based on these movies they're both excellent. I prefer The Batman, both are excellent movies but everything about The Batman clicks for me.
